Vehicles that rely on combustion engines to produce the energy they need to move must come with a fuel gauge. It is this gauge that notifies the driver that the vehicle is using reserve fuel; that way, they can refuel before the reserve is exhausted.
Trucks, cars, watercraft, planes – basically vehicles of all sizes, uses and shapes – typically have fuel pressure notification equipment fitted in them. Depending on the vehicle’s age, the fuel gauge may be computer operated, completely mechanical, or maybe a combination of both. Fuel pressure gauges on more modern cars are usually more advanced; though some hobbyists will still install a mechanical pressure gauge for performance or aesthetic purposes.
The signal is typically communicated by an indicator that is generally mounted on the automobile’s dashboard with other gauges (like the oil pressure gauge) and indicators. Most mechanical fuel gauge indicators have a hemispherical arc with several marked points that correspond to certain levels of tank fullness.
Computerised, digital fuel pressure gauges are more advanced and are generally limited to the more recent versions of luxury vehicles. These gauges involve the use of advanced sensors that communicate the level of fuel to the vehicle’s central computer. The computer then transmits a signal to the display on the dashboard, which indicates fuel level amongst other engine performance related information.
The right fuel pressure is essential for the optimal performance and operation of the engine. Low pressure could result in poor performance, decreased fuel economy, and rough idling. High fuel pressure, which is when more than the needed amount of fuel is pushed through injectors, results in a rich air-to-fuel ratio. The richer the ratio, the blacker the exhaust and the higher the emissions – something that could lead to overheating and which could cause the catalytic converter to get damaged. When the fuel regulator isn’t returning the right amounts of fuel, the result could be higher than usual fuel pressure. Fitting a new fuel pressure gauge will allow you to monitor high and low pressure protecting your fuel system from damage.
